The strength of a compliment

Starting with the ideas of Burrhus F. Skinner (American psychologist, 1904-1990), Dale Carnegie demonstrates the effectiveness of his method which bans criticism and emphasises encouragement as a tool to stimulate the actions of his peers. In particular, he takes as an example the great millionaires Andrew Carnegie and John D. Rockefeller (1839-1937), who he claims made their fortune from, amongst other talents, this ability to motivate their employees and to drive them to do their best to be worthy of the compliments that had been poured onto them. The power of self-confidence is decisive. It is therefore evident for Dale Carnegie that admiration and praise feed this power and stimulate those who are subjected to it. He thus repeats, many times, this motto: “a drop of honey catches more flies than a gallon of gall” (p. 135).
